What is the Adaptive Functioning Capacity assessment?

Understanding how well someone adapts to everyday life is an important part of recognising and managing disabilities and conditions, including autism and intellectual disability. This process highlights a person’s specific abilities and the areas where they may need more support. It’s also a valuable tool for seeing how someone is improving over time.

Why would you need the Adaptive Functioning Capacity assessment?

If you’re signing up for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), or you’re preparing for an NDIS plan review, and you already have a formal diagnosis, having an assessment of your adaptive behaviours can be extremely beneficial. Using tools like the ABAS-3, WHODAS 2.0, and LSP-16 can provide clear evidence on how certain difficulties might be affecting your day-to-day life. Plus, these assessments are useful for keeping track of the positive changes and progress in your journey.

What does it look at?

The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System, Third Edition (ABAS-3) is an established tool designed to evaluate a variety of important day-to-day skills in individuals. It looks at areas such as:

  • Communication
  • Community involvement
  • Academic functioning
  • Domestic skills
  • Health and safety awareness
  • Leisure activities
  • Personal care
  • Goal-setting and self-management (self-direction)
  • Social interaction
  • Motor skills
  • Work skills

For assessing disability in adults aged 18 and older, the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (WHODAS 2.0) is utilized. This assessment covers different aspects of daily functioning, including:

  • Understanding and communication
  • Mobility
  • Self-care
  • Social relationships
  • Domestic, professional, or educational activities (Life activities)
  • Participation and engagement in society

For a concise evaluation of functional abilities in adults, the Life Skills Profile 16 (LSP-16) is a brief assessment tool. Our experienced clinicians are fully equipped to administer the LSP-16 to those who need it.
